How to get your fitness fix in the emirate
Between October and November every year, Dubai thrums with physical activity for its 30x30 fitness challenge.
Supported by a bustling calendar of free classes, events, and tournaments, the city’s residents are challenged to exercise for 30 minutes a day, for 30 days.
The event exemplifies Dubai’s enthusiasm towards active lifestyles, showcasing its impressive array of sports facilities and clubs – and its fitness-friendly landscape.
Weekday workouts
Dubai has everything its citizens need to maintain fitness.
Beaches make for excellent running routes – particularly along the spectacular Palm Jumeirah that unfolds into the Arabian Gulf. And leafy parks punctuate the city, often with purpose-built running tracks.
A growing network of cycle paths criss-crosses the city. Cycling clubs like the Dubai Roadsters are great for exploring more adventurous trails like the Al Qudra desert cycle track or mountainous exclave of Hatta.
Indoor gyms are easily found, but many choose to break their sweat in the sun using the outdoor equipment that lines the Al Ittihad Park running track or the Dubai Marina promenade.
Competitive sports
With large Indian and Commonwealth populations, cricket, soccer, and rugby are all popular in Dubai, with clubs available for all skill levels.
The Sevens Stadium and downtown Ballers fitness center offer outdoor pitches, while Dubai Sports City and U-Pro Dubai have plenty of indoor space, alongside courts for badminton, tennis and padel – which has become especially favored in the city.
Volleyball is often played on the beach, as well as indoors. With the region’s long history of equestrianism, there are numerous polo clubs.
And golfers have their pick of a variety of championship greens, including the Jumeirah Golf Estates and Emirates Golf Club Majlis course – which both host major international tournaments.
Watersports
Befitting a coastal city with year-round sunshine, Dubai has a lot to offer watersports enthusiasts.
Wakeboarding, wakesurfing and waterskiing are all especially popular in the emirate – available at Dubai Marina – as are their more sedate cousins, paddleboarding, kitesurfing and parasailing, which can be done at most beaches.
Scuba divers can swim with the fishes at the Ambassador Lagoon, Dubai Aquarium or off the coast of Jumeirah beach.
And the more vehicularly inclined can kayak at the foot of the Hajar mountains, jet ski along the coast, or join the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club.
Hive of activity
Dubai is continually evolving its fitness landscape to ensure its citizens can enjoy an active lifestyle.
Whatever sport you’re into, you’re bound to find the facilities to do it – and a club of likeminded enthusiasts to do it with.
