Innovative policies have shaped its growth, and Shenzhen is ready to be the world\u2019s creative capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>China\u2019s meteoric economic rise over the past three decades has been a result of its Open Door Policy, launched in the late 70s, when it established Special Economic Zones (SEZ). Shenzhen, China\u2019s first SEZ, has undergone several transformations: It first grew into \u201cthe world\u2019s factory\u201d, before emerging as China\u2019s Silicon Valley and was named the UNESCO Creative City of Design in 2008.<br><br>Powering its transformations are the city\u2019s creative spirit, openness to international cultures, and entrepreneurial environment. But how did these traits become part of Shenzhen\u2019s DNA?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#0071a1\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading\"><h2 id=\"from-vision-to-reality\" class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading__heading\">From Vision to Reality<\/h2><div class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading__content\"><p><span style=\"color:#FFFFFF\" class=\"color\">In August 1979, the Shekou industrial zone first broke ground in the bay area that is now Shenzhen\u2019s Nanshan District. For the first time since its founding, China was opening its doors to receive overseas investment.<\/span><br><br><span style=\"color:#FFFFFF\" class=\"color\">As funding flowed and enterprise boomed, Nanshan gained a reputation for being free and innovative. Higher salaries were attracting a new workforce. As imports became regular, so did foreign cultures. It\u2019s where Huawei established the first office, where Tencent\u2019s founder went to college, and where DJI is building its new headquarters.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sznews.com\/news\/content\/2020-10\/27\/content_23667320.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored\">One out of every four people<\/a> in Shenzhen is a business owner of some sort, making it the most entrepreneurial city in China. Nanshan District and Shenzhen remain committed to being the hub for new ventures to succeed. The government provides you with the soil to let you grow first,\u201c says Zhao. \u201cThey understand how difficult things can be in the beginning.\u201c<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up her business had been a smooth bureaucratic experience, something Zhao appreciates, especially as she had been busy at the start sourcing fabrics and designing dresses. \u201cI did not have to wait in line for paperwork, nor did I have to receive any visiting officials,\u201d Zhao says.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tax cuts also helped the fledgling business take off, an initiative from the Shenzen government to nurture its homegrown apparel industry based around Dalang, the fashion district. As the first Chinese designer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202009\/08\/WS5f56e192a310675eafc5822a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored\">appear on Milan Fashion Week<\/a>, Zhou has ambitions to take her collection global.<br><br>Zhao has witnessed significant growth in Shenzhen\u2019s design industry over the past two decades. In 2003, culture was placed at the forefront, and resources were channeled into promoting industries that contribute to cultural development. Launched in 2018, the award gives out a total prize of US 1.5million annually.
