But the events of the last year meant swathes of office workers experienced at-home working for the first time \u2013 and they liked it. In Microsoft\u2019s 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/en-xm\/features\/three-secrets-to-a-highly-successful-hybrid-workforce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored\">Work Reworked survey<\/a>, people said they would like to continue working from home an average of two days a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many business leaders were sceptical about how productivity would hold up in a remote and hybrid working environment, but the last year has shown that with the right resources, it\u2019s business as usual. According to the survey, <a href=\"https:\/\/query.prod.cms.rt.microsoft.com\/cms\/api\/am\/binary\/RE4LJ5J?wt.mc_id=AID3024549_QSG_514857\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored\">97% now cite flexible working<\/a> as a top transformation priority, and <a href=\"https:\/\/query.prod.cms.rt.microsoft.com\/cms\/api\/am\/binary\/RE4LJ5J?wt.mc_id=AID3024549_QSG_514857\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored\">93% expect some form of hybrid working to continue<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s undeniable that this is an issue that needs careful consideration. Uprooting everyone from the office and consigning them to individual workspaces does have its drawbacks. People can feel disconnected and reduced to little more than an avatar. The Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/worklab\/work-trend-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored\">Work Trend Index<\/a> also found that while remote work might have resulted in high productivity, it doesn\u2019t tell the story. But it wasn\u2019t long before a darker side emerged.&nbsp;<\/p><p>In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/query.prod.cms.rt.microsoft.com\/cms\/api\/am\/binary\/RE4LJ5J?wt.mc_id=AID3024549_QSG_514857\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored\">70% of remote workers<\/a> reported increased stress levels since working from home. And 40% said their mental health had deteriorated.<\/p><p>The top three challenges of remote working cited in the survey were:<\/p><p><strong>Missing company culture<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Maintaining team cohesion<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Coping with increased siloes<\/strong><\/p><p>Further, <a href=\"https:\/\/query.prod.cms.rt.microsoft.com\/cms\/api\/am\/binary\/RE4MGSA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored\">60% of respondents<\/a> said they felt less connected to their team after switching to home working. Constant interruptions, such as from shared or rented accommodation or caring for young children while also trying to work, were also a problem.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Tracking down team members to answer questions was a key concern. So was \u2018unnecessary communications\u2019, including meetings, emails, and calls.<\/p><p>Home working serves to highlight the contradiction of modern connectivity: Both more connected, and more isolated, than ever before. People are perpetually distracted but craving human connection.<\/p><p><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading\"><h2 id=\"prioritizing-employee-experience\" class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading__heading\">Prioritizing employee experience<\/h2><div class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading__content\"><p>From a workflow perspective, tools like Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Teams give knowledge workers everything they need to conduct business remotely.<\/p><p>What\u2019s missing is the <em>experience <\/em>of work. Everything that contributes to our growth and wellbeing as people. Everything that makes us healthier and happier \u2013 and more productive as a result. So, it\u2019s perhaps ironic that the solution to this experience deficit may be technological.
