Baroque buildings from the time of Queen Maria Theresa are the dominant force, but classicism, romanticism, and historicism are woven into the story of Hungary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading\"><h2 id=\"legacies-of-a-royal-past\" class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading__heading\">Legacies of a royal past<\/h2><div class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading__content\"><p>The city was once three,&nbsp;Buda, \u00d3buda and Pest&nbsp;divided by the magnificent Danube. The enduring image of Budapest is one of a fairytale skyline; dramatic bridges crossing the Danube as it snakesbetween the Hungarian parliament building and Buda Castle. And it\u2019s this the castle, the seat of kings and emperors, that should be first on any visitor\u2019s list. Sections of the palace date back to the 14<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century, and the whole building has a magical appearance to it. The hill on which the whole castle district sits on a hill which is strangely hollow, and is full of a warren of caves, tunnels, and cellars. St. Stephen\u2019s Basilica is the largest church in Budapest, standing 96 meters tall. It took 54 years to build, and is surrounded by a pretty square. Designed by prolific Hungarian architect Mikl\u00f3s Ybl, it opened in 1884. Inside and out, it has an unmistakable sense of both grandeur and drama and is unsurprisingly one of the most visited buildings in Hungary.&nbsp;<\/p><p>If there\u2019s a building in Budapest that evokes the spirit of the Belle Epoque, it\u2019s the P\u00e1risi Passage Caf\u00e9 &amp; Brasserie. It sits in what was once Budapest\u2019s first modern department store, and is now part of the P\u00e1risi Udvar Hotel. It\u2019s brand new, opening in May of this year, and has already won awards, including Best Public Architecture at the International Property Awards. The building was designed to connect the city and with the surrounding parkland, and the gently sloping lines and extraordinary rooftop garden \u2013 from which you can take in the view.\u00a0\u00a0Equally impressive is the fa\u00e7ade decoration of almost 500,000 pixels, creating a contemporary adaptation of Hungarian and international ethnographic motifs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading\"><h2 id=\"a-fitting-home-for-a-musical-heritage\" class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading__heading\">A fitting home for a musical heritage<\/h2><div class=\"wp-block-cnn-heading__content\"><p>Equally impressive is Budapest\u2019s House of Music (HoM), where Hungary\u2019s internationally renowned musical heritage can be explored. Sitting in the City Park, close to the famed Sz\u00e9chenyi Baths, this strikingly beautiful design is in complete harmony with the mature trees that surround it. This is especially true in the difficult years after WWII.
