Raise the Roof
Sancheong Earthenware is preserving Korean heritage, one tile at a time.
Cards background
Cultural landmarks and traditional houses in Korea, known as ‘hanok’, are renowned for their distinctive architecture and curved roofs.

The roofs are covered with traditional tiles called ‘giwa’. These tiles are designed to overlap without the need for nails.

Giwa often feature patterns believed to offer protection from bad energy.

As traditional architecture fades, so have the number of giwa tile manufacturers.

Sancheong Earthenware is one of the few factories still producing giwa tiles. However, preserving this heritage was challenging until it received help from Samsung’s Smart Factory Support Initiative to modernize its factory operations.

Samsung believes in freely sharing its technological expertise with society. By supporting smaller companies, Samsung aims to nurture a robust industrial ecosystem where companies can succeed and grow together.
At Sancheong, time efficiency was improved by installing new layouts, while a new firing rack increased production volume and reduced fuel costs.
Drag to cut the tile

Old and inefficient tile cutting equipment led to a 20% product defect rate.

The factory was upgraded with specially designed tile molds to improve product quality.

Drag to close the door

Temperature management was improved with sensors and IoT devices.

Improved temperature management systems stop hot air escaping and help prevent issues such as cracks and reduces fuel costs.

By sharing its knowledge, Samsung is helping small businesses like Sancheong thrive sustainably in a modern environment, enabling them to continue playing a vital role in preserving Korean heritage.
